Job Summary
The Civil/Structural Engineer's role encompasses a range of responsibilities within the MBTA. This includes developing maintenance contracts, specifications, engineering plans, and maintenance standards for the MBTA's bridges and tunnels, and facility assets such as stations, administrative buildings, and vehicle maintenance facilities. Additionally, the Civil/Structural Engineer will actively participate in the development of capital improvement projects for a variety of engineering and maintenance initiatives.
As part of this role, the Engineer will conduct comprehensive studies, surveys, and cost estimates for these projects. Furthermore, the Engineer will be responsible for assessing the existing assets, considering evaluating their condition, maintainability, and operational requirements. These assessments will guide the collaboration with management and trade staff to determine the appropriate actions, whether it be maintenance, repair, or asset replacement, to ensure optimal operational efficiency.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop and/or prepare technical specifications for maintenance contracts.
- Participate in design reviews, project design groups and review drawings or specifications for Capital Programs performed by consultants, contractors, and MBTA engineering staff.
- Provide recommendations for improved performance, efficiency, maintainability, and life-cycle reliability.
- Develop preliminary engineering designs, specifications, and standards for modifications to the various structures.
- Collaborate with vendors, project managers, and in-house crews to carry projects to successful completion.
- Coordinate the planning, scheduling and implementation of all testing performed for the purpose of improving the reliability of the MBTA s structural assets.
- Review inspection findings of bridges, retaining walls and structural elements to verify quality, and prepare required repair designs.
- Review and/or develop Asset Management Plans and Preventive Maintenance and Inspection for certain asset types.
- Experience with Enterprise Asset Management Systems (EAMS) or Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
- Conduct periodic inspection and audits to confirm compliance with operations and maintenance programs including corrective maintenance calls, preventative maintenance, safety programs, or hazardous materials.
- Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor, or co-worker in a courteous and professional manner consistent with the Authority's driven by customer service quality standard.
- Drive a company or personal vehicle to visit work sites and to assist at emergencies, service disruptions, and/or other events as needed.
- Review and/or develop Asset Management Plans and Preventive Maintenance and Inspection for certain asset types.
- Establish and maintain sound union/management relations while upholding the rights and interests of management and adhering to collective bargaining agreements.
- Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.
Minimum Requirements & Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering from an accredited institution
- Effective organizational, analytical, time management and multi-tasking skills.
- Intermediate level skills of Bridge Inspection software, AutoCAD, MS Office.
- Experience with CMMS such as Trapeze, Maximo, etc.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and present effectively to a diverse group of stakeholders and customers.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and work effectively with a diverse workforce.
- Familiarity with drone/remote inspections on bridges and structures.

Preferred Experience and Skills
- A Massachusetts Engineer in Training (EIT)
- Five (5) or more years of engineering experience.
- Three (3) or more years of experience with bridge inspection and structural inspection
- NHI 130053 Safety inspection of in-service bridges
- Drone pilot license, Part 107 remote pilot certification
- A master's degree in civil, structural, or mechanical engineering, facilities management or a related field from an accredited institution.

- Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service
