The role:

Are you ready for an exciting summer internship? Do you have a desire to learn? Check out our upcoming opportunity in Rogue Valley! You will work on a project to enhance safety and connectivity, including pavement replacement at the Big X intersection, ADA ramp upgrades, and improvements to bike and pedestrian paths. The project also includes preventive maintenance on four structures and the creation of a new bicycle/pedestrian corridor on Highway 99 in the Phoenix area, which was impacted by the Alameda fire. Additionally, you’ll improve transit access with new bus stops, sidewalks, and better lighting.

This internship will be full-time work with a projected to start in June 2025. Gain hands-on experience supporting inspection activities on active construction sites, with opportunities to apply skills in civil engineering and construction management. What you will learn:

  • Represent ODOT on highway construction sites.

  • Read and comprehend contract plans and specifications for construction projects.

  • Inspects and documents work performed by contractors.

  • Checks quality and quantity of materials received on project by contractor.

  • Calculates and/or checks construction grades and quantities, prepares quantity, cost estimates, and technical reports.

  • Maintains positive relations with other ODOT units, Contractor personnel, the motoring public, property owners, and other local jurisdictions.

  • Record data in field notes and project records; checks field notes for accuracy.

  • Modifies engineering drawings to reflect "As Constructed" information.

  • Foster positive relationships with other ODOT employees, contractors, property owners and the public.

  • Assembles and summarizes bid items; drafts specifications and other reports.

  • Review project documents for compliance to local, state, and federal guidelines.

Work Environment:

  • Work outdoors, in all weather conditions, 70% or more of the time – field work involves working around construction equipment and traffic hazards, and walking on various types of terrain, climbing ladders, traversing scaffolding, and working in elevated locations.

  • Lift and carry material or equipment that weighs up to 50 pounds.

  • This position will be in office and in the field, which may include night work.

We are accepting applications from civil, construction engineering or related fields of study college students who start their freshman year at the time of hire (June 2025), and college students in their freshman, sophomore, junior and/or senior year.

OR

Candidates who have graduated in the last two years in civil, construction engineering or a related field.

AND

Special qualifications:

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

  • Coursework in civil or construction engineering management.

  • Experience in perform calculations for quantity documentation.

  • Experience working independently and as part of a team.

  • Experience working on projects that demands a high attention to detail and strong writing skills.
