Full Job Description
The Director of Engineering will lead a dynamic team of experienced engineering professionals and managers to deliver innovative solutions that drive business outcomes. This position involves strategic oversight of engineering practices, process improvement, and resource management. Working closely with senior leadership, the Director of Engineering will establish operational plans and ensure alignment with the organization’s goals. This role requires a results-oriented leader with a strong background in engineering management and a commitment to fostering a collaborative and proactive work environment.
Essential Functions:
* Leadership & Management: Lead and manage a team of seasoned engineering professionals, supervisors, and associated managers, fostering a high-performance culture that aligns with company values. Serve as a mentor, promoting career development, best practices, and a proactive approach within the team.
* Strategic Communication: Act as a liaison within and outside the organization to influence policies, practices, and approaches. Communicate effectively to support alignment on engineering goals, foster cross-functional collaboration, and drive continuous improvement.
* Process & Product Improvement: Identify and lead efforts for significant improvements in processes, systems, or products that enhance team performance and align with business objectives.
* Operational Planning: Develop and execute short-term operational plans with measurable outcomes that directly contribute to departmental and business area results.
* Resource & Staffing Management: Execute workforce and staffing plans in partnership with senior engineering management to ensure human capital availability aligns with business goals. This includes oversight of recruitment, onboarding, and development activities to maintain optimal staffing levels and expertise.
* Performance Management: Handle staffing performance issues with a structured approach, starting with verbal warnings and progressing to formal Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) in consultation with senior management and the Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP).
* Ownership of Hiring and Compensation: Oversee department-specific hiring and compensation decisions in alignment with senior management review and approval, ensuring hiring practices meet business and talent acquisition needs.
* Budget & Resource Allocation: Collaborate with the Senior Engineering Manager to develop and manage budgets for operational needs, equipment, and material purchases. Ensure the department meets its Annual Operating Plan (AOP) budget.
* Standardization & Best Practices: Promote the application of engineering standards, best practices, and process adherence across all projects. Define, evolve, and tailor processes as needed to meet new requirements and support continuous improvement within the engineering function.
* Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or a related field; a Master’s degree is preferred.
* 10+ years of engineering experience with 5+ years in a leadership role, preferably in a complex technical environment.
* Previous experience in Department of Defense (DoD) projects or the shipbuilding industry is a plus.
* Demonstrated experience managing engineering teams, including hiring, performance management, and career development.
* Strong ability to influence and implement change within an organization.
* Knowledge of budgeting and resource allocation in alignment with business and operational objectives.
* Proven track record of leading process improvements and driving operational efficiencies.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across multiple teams and levels.
